I read an article in USA Today this week that stated that we are “entering the dawn of the super-stress era.” I guess it’s a bit like super-sizing. We’re not content with just being stressed, we’re now super-stressed.

According to the article by Bruce Horowitz, seven out of 10 Americans said they suffer physical symptoms due to stress. According to the American Psychological Association, the top three causes of stress are money, work and the economy.

A day later I was driving and heard an ad for a mood-enhancing supplement to help you take the edge off your stressful day. There’s even a new category of drinks on the market called relaxation drinks. I guess alcohol is getting some competition!

The products and services to help you distress are proliferating. But is it really necessary? And won’t you be even more stressed when you shell out the big bucks to unwind and release your inner turmoil?

I hope that you don’t find yourself in the super-stressed or even the moderately stressed category; but if you do, here are three simple suggestions from the experts:

  1. Breathe. Take the time to simply breathe and meditate. It costs nothing and can work wonders according to gurus like Deepak Chopra.
  2. Get outside and take a walk. The combination of fresh air and nature are a revitalizing cocktail that won’t leave you with a stress hangover.
  3. Laugh. It is the best medicine. And it costs nothing. Watch some funny YouTube videos, hang out with friends who can tickle your funny bone or simply find a way to bring out your inner silliness.
